Title:  “A Southern Chemist Tale: The First 60 Years”

Abstract: I will present an overview of my career as a polymer chemist, beginning with my years as a graduate student at Akron, through 5 years in industry and 14 years on the faculty at UAB, and ending up with my 16 years at UT and ORNL. The underlying scientific theme will be the conception and continuing development of “superelastomers.”

Biography: Dr. Mays received his B.S. degree in polymer science from the University of Southern Mississippi and his Ph.D. degree in polymer science at the University of Akron. He then worked in industry for five years with Hercules, Inc., prior to joining the chemistry faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Mays moved to Tennessee in 2002 to accept a joint appointment at the University of Tennessee and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
