Artist Talk: Jaya Howey, Artist-in-Residence in Painting & Drawing

Thursday February 20 @ 7:30pm

McCarty Auditorium, Room 109, Art & Architecture Building

1715 Volunteer Blvd.

Sponsored by The UT School of Art

Jaya Howey, the Spring 2015 Artist-in-Residence, will discuss his work as an artist.

Jaya Howey's current work draws upon manga, emoticons, and Letterist metagraphics to forge characters and language within the realm of his paintings. His current work uses cut vinyl stencils, which are applied to canvas and painted through. Howey uses a formal catalog of circles and lines to creates simple yet evocative characters. Through this restrained language, he creates a space where viewers react to the range of emotions, text, and events presented in each painting.

Jaya Howey received his MFA from Columbia University and his BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. His work has been exhibited national and reviewed in ArtForum, Frieze, and the Village Voice.

About the Artist-in-Residence program at UT

In addition to our core faculty, our nationally recognized Artist-in-Residence program brings a different visiting professional artist to the UT campus each semester. This artist-in-residence (AIR) teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in both areas. The AIR, who typically works and resides in New York or other urban centers, acts as an additional bridge between the university and life beyond it. The AIR brings with them differing experiences, views, aesthetics, and backgrounds.
