JUNIOR COLLOQUIUM -- How the World Fits Together

Thursday, 20 February, 2014

SPEAKER:  Prof. Chaim Goodman-Strauss, University of Arkansas

TITLE: How the world fits together

ABSTRACT: How can things fit together? Copies of Livio's Pentagon can fit together in a surprising variety of patterns! But it's just as interesting to ask what they can't fit together to form- can you continue to add to the patch of tiles to the patch that is started so that it covers larger and larger regions forever? It's not so easy to tell! Questions about tilings are surprisingly subtle and endlessly intriguing-which is not that surprising, really, as tilings provide a model of how real materials can form, in all the complex and varied structure around us!

Pizza will be available at 3:10 p.m.
