Free and open to the public

Sunday, November 11, 2012

Dr. Earl J. Hess will be on hand to present a talk, and sign copies of his new Civil War book, The Knoxville Campaign: Burnside and Longstreet in East Tennessee. "The Knoxville Campaign" explores the Civil War as it played out in the mountains and valleys of East Tennessee, and sheds new light on the generalship of James Longstreet and Ambrose Burnside, as well as such lesser players as Micah Jenkins and Orlando Poe.

Dr. Hess has been a student of Civil War history since he was a teenager, growing up in rural Missouri. His Ph.D. in American Studies, with a concentration in History, was awarded by Purdue University in 1986. He has taught at a number of institutions, and is currently at Lincoln Memorial University, in Harrogate, Tennessee, where he is Associate Professor of History, past director of the History Program, and holds the Stewart McClelland Chair. Dr. Hess has published more than a dozen books on Civil War history, over twenty journal articles, and more than a hundred book reviews for academic history journals.

The McClung Museum is a general museum with collections in anthropology, archaeology, decorative arts, local history, and natural history.
