What is the One story that has been missed in this larger narrative about militarism?
The Sociology Colloquium presents:
Dr. R. Scott Frey, Professor, Sociology, UT
Dr. Frey will present the story of the use of Agent Orange and other herbicides during the American War in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. The origins and nature of Agent Orange and related herbicides are first outlined. The scope of the military use of herbicides during the war is discussed and the adverse environmental, health, and economic consequences of herbicide use are documented. It is argued that the military use of herbicides resulted from a set of interrelated geopolitical and domestic tensions. Recent developments in this fifty-year story are discussed. It is concluded that militarism and war making have contributed to the globalization and unequal distribution of environmental problems in the world-system.
